Overview

Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) has been practiced for more than 4,000 years, and along with acupuncture is an important component of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. Veterinarians are increasingly using these treatment methods in a clinical setting, Chinese Veterinary Herbology will serve as a clear, practical guide to the theory and application of CHM into established veterinary practices.

Chinese Veterinary Herbology will be divided into three parts. Part I will address herbal materia medica used in treating various disorders and diseases. Part II will provide 400 herbal formulas used in treating large and small animals. Part III will discuss the clinical application of herbal treatments. Within these sections the authors will also discuss the history of each herb, the basis of formulation of herbal recipes, energetic actions, indications, and contraindications of each formula, dosage requirements for both large and small animals and information on clinical and pharmacological studies performed with herbal treatments.

About the Author

Huisheng Xie received his DVM at the Sichuan College of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine in Sichuan, China. He was an assistant and staff veterinarian in the College of Veterinary Medicine of the Beijing Agricultural University. After receiving his master of veterinary science in veterinary acupuncture, he was assistant and associate professor in the Beijing Agricultural University College of Veterinary Medicine. He received advanced training in human acupuncture at the Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the National Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and later earned his PhD from the University of Florida for investigation of the mechanisms of pain control in horses using acupuncture. Currently, he is clinical assistant professor and director of the acupuncture internship training program in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida. Dr. Xie is founder of the Chi Institute in Reddick, Florida, which trains veterinarians in Chinese acupuncture and herbal medicine (www.tcvm.com). He has received achievement awards from the Ministry of Agriculture, the National Science and Technology Committee, the Beijing Agricultural University, Nihon University (Japan), University of Mexico (Mexico), and China National Society of TCVM. He speaks internationally on veterinary acupuncture and herbal medicine, and is the author of numerous books and papers. His textbooks include Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, Volume 1, Fundamental Principles.

Vanessa Preast received her DVM from the University of Florida in 2000. As a graduate of the Chi Institute, she became certified in small animal acupuncture. She incorporated acupuncture into her practice of small animal medicine and surgery. Currently, she is a doctoral student in teaching and learning. She coauthored and edited Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, Volume 1, Fundamental Principles.

Description: This is a concise yet practical and comprehensive reference for veterinarians familiar with and trained in traditional Chinese veterinary medicine (TCVM) who want to use or integrate Chinese veterinary herbology into their veterinary practice. Excellent background information, descriptions, diagrams, illustrations, and examples make this a useful addition to the library of any veterinarian interested in or trained in TCVM.
Purpose: The purpose is "to serve as a quick reference for practicing veterinarians and as a textbook for continuing education courses in TCVM" in Chinese veterinary herbology. As more traditionally trained veterinarians recognize the value of integrating TCVM and western veterinary medical therapies to improve overall patient care, it is increasingly important to have valid, accurate references available as an adjunct to formal TCVM training. This book succeeds by bringing together many of the most renowned experts in TCVM and Chinese veterinary herbology to provide a user-friendly resource.
Audience: It is intended for practicing veterinarians who are trained in TCVM and as a textbook for students and veterinarians studying TCVM. Dr. Xie is certainly a credible authority in Chinese veterinary herbology and TCVM as indicated by his depth of experience, education, research, teaching, and practice.
Features: This book provides a general overview of clinical applications of Chinese herbal medication in companion animals and in horses as well as specific applications of individual herbs and herbal formulas. The organization of the book allows TCVM trained veterinary practitioners of all experience levels to quickly find the information necessary to appropriately treat their patients. Often overlooked, the appendixes have considerable valuable and interesting information, including a concise history of TCVM, pronunciation guide, glossary of common TCVM terms, and list of herbal suppliers. A brief review of the five categories of animal constitutions (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) would be helpful, as it is mentioned but not defined. On the other hand, these constitutions are basic tenets of TCVM, so should be familiar to the intended audience.
Assessment: This should be considered a valuable resource for any TCVM practitioner or student of TCVM. It has some similarities to Veterinary Herbal Medicine, Wynn and Fougere (Elsevier, 2007), but it provides more TCVM-based information, such as treatment according to the pattern of the disease condition, which is critically important for choosing the proper herbs and herbal formulas when integrating TCVM with traditional western veterinary medicine.
