Overview

DANGEROUSLY GOOD. DISTINCTIVELY DEAVER.

Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs return to New York City to confront a killer terrorizing couples at their happiest—and most vulnerable.

In the early hours of a quiet, weekend morning in Manhattan's Diamond District, a brutal triple murder shocks the city. Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs quickly take the case. Curiously, the killer has left behind a half-million dollars' worth of gems at the murder scene, a jewelry store on 47th street. As more crimes follow, it becomes clear that the killer's target is not gems, but engaged couples themselves.

The Promisor vows to take the lives of men and women during their most precious moments—midway through the purchase of an engagement ring, after a meeting with a wedding planner, trying on the perfect gown for a day that will never come. The Promisor arrives silently, armed with knife or gun, and a time of bliss is transformed, in an instant, to one of horror.

Soon the Promiser makes a dangerous mistake: leaving behind an innocent witness, Vimal Lahori, a talented young diamond cutter, who can help Rhyme and Sachs blow the lid off the case. They must track down Vimal before the killer can correct his fatal error. Then disaster strikes, threatening to tear apart the very fabric of the city—and providing the perfect cover for the killer to slip through the cracks.

Editorial Reviews

APRIL 2018 - AudioFile

Deaver’s fourteenth mystery to feature detectives Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs is set in Manhattan’s Diamond District, where a sadistic killer is ruining wedding plans. The cast of characters is large, and narrator Edoardo Ballerini deftly gives each of them a nuanced voice, which helps the listener stay oriented as the plot grows increasingly complex. Ballerini relies on an impressive array of accents—Indian, Russian, British, and, of course, New York cop—mostly with success, though his South African falls a bit short. While not without suspense, the plot twists are more frustrating than genuinely surprising. Nonetheless, it should appeal to fans of the genre, though brides-to-be should forgo listening. The New York Times Book Review - Marilyn Stasio

Jeffery Deaver is at his graciously cruel best in The Cutting Edge…[Lincoln] Rhyme may be the working brain on this crew, but hang on when his partner, Amelia Sachs, does her spooky-psych thing and projects herself into the mind of this sick killer.

★ 02/26/2018
At the start of Thriller Award–winner Deaver’s stellar 14th Lincoln Rhyme novel (after 2017’s The Burial Hour), William Sloane and Anna Markam, an engaged couple, enter the jewelry store of Jatin Patel, a master diamond cutter who works in Manhattan’s diamond district, to pick up a ring. Unfortunately, a gunman wearing a ski mask is right behind them. After the intruder shoots William and Anna dead, he tortures and kills Jatin with a box-cutter. Vimal Lahori, an employee, arrives at the store, takes a shot in the side from the killer, and manages to escape. Rhyme and his usual team—Det. Lon Sellitto of the NYPD, lover Amelia Sachs, patrol officer Ron Pulaski, and lab expert Mel Cooper—investigate. The tension rises as Vimal tries to stay hidden, the killer hunts more victims, and the media receive a note from “The Promisor” threatening the deaths of more engaged couples. Deaver keeps the twists and surprises coming in this roller-coaster ride of a thriller. Five-city author tour. Agent: Deborah Schneider, Gelfman Schneider Literary Agents. (Apr.)

Shots Magazine

Deaver brings it all together and after drawing in the readers, delivers twist after twist, never letting up until the final chapter. Even then, he gives you a smack in the mouth. It is really top-drawer writing.

Deaver is at his graciously cruel best in THE CUTTING EDGE. [His] singular flair for ghastly irony is on full display. Sympathetic characters... Deaver seduces us.

South Florida Sun-Sentinel Oline Cogdill

Deaver's approach excels in THE CUTTING EDGE, the 14th novel to feature Lincoln and his assistant, Amelia Sachs... Deaver keeps the level of suspense high as he also examines the gem trade and takes readers on an insider's tour of New York City. Deaver's intelligent characters show their mettle as the twists mount.

Independent (Dublin)

The nerve-jangling resolution of Deaver’s latest chiller is as sparkling as any of the gems at the center of The Cutting Edge…[with] one of the most vertiginous cliff-hangers.”

The Independent (Dublin)

The nerve-jangling resolution of Deaver's latest chiller is as sparkling as any of the gems at the centre of The Cutting Edge, but he also manages in the final couple of pages to deliver one of the most vertiginous cliff-hangers any fan of the Lincoln Rhyme stories could ever wish for.
