Description: This reference book covers numerous topics in the care of the pediatric population. The chapters cover anything from care of the healthy newborn and child to care of the critically ill pediatric patient, including information on both diagnosis and treatment. The chapters contain key info boxes at the beginning of each topic within the chapter to give the readers a concise description of the material that lies ahead. There are also several tables within the chapters that help give the readers an organized way to compare diagnoses based on etiology, symptoms, treatments, and the like. There are also several diagnosis and treatment algorithms for the readers to use. This is the 26th edition; the previous edition was published in 2020.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to provide a concise and comprehensive source for information on pediatric patients. It is intended to be used across the spectrum of medical training from medical students to attending physicians. The information is meant to be in-depth enough for a new medical student to use to gain knowledge on the topics but concise enough to aid an attending physician in managing diseases, both mild and severe, and providing a resource of evidence-based care. The objectives are worthy and useful to clinicians who care for the pediatric population and the book is a much-needed resource for busy physicians. The book does a great job of meeting the objectives by providing a comprehensive reference of numerous topics ranging from caring for healthy children to very ill children and providing the information in a clear and concise manner so that it can be referenced quickly when needed.
Audience: The book is written for multiple different audiences including students, residents, and clinicians. The book targets primary care specialties including pediatrics, family medicine, and other healthcare clinicians including nurses, APRNs, PAs, etc. I believe this book does reach the targeted audiences by using easy-to-understand language, concise information that isn't overwhelming, and easy-to-navigate chapters. The authors are experts in their respective fields, ranging from associate professors, department chairs, directors, and instructors at various institutions throughout the country. The authors include MDs, PhDs, PharmDs, MPH, MS, and the like, all in their respective fields of interest and expertise.
Features: The book as a whole does a great job of providing very concise information on a variety of topics. The writing is clear and easy to understand. The organization of the information is logical, starting with care of the newborn infant and progressing through care of the adolescent patient. There are various larger topics such as substance use disorders, eating disorders, and psychiatric care. The book then transitions into problems based on body system such as diseases of the skin, GI tract, and cardiovascular system. I especially enjoyed the chapters based on body system. As a student, I always felt these chapters allowed for the most comprehensive way to learn a disease process. As an attending, these chapters allow me to locate my topic of interest much more easily. I also like that the "essentials" bullet points at the beginning of every topic help remind readers of the hallmarks of disease processes and injuries. The recommended treatment sections of the chapters are also helpful and easy to read, while citations let readers know the information is up to date and accurate. The tables within the chapters also provide a nice way to view the information in a quick manner and compare medications, diseases, lab values, and the like in a quick manner without having to read each section in depth. I do feel that the chapters on more visual diseases, such as the chapter on skin, could use some visual references so readers can have a visual reference of what these skin disorders look like. The other chapters do contain some pictures, but they are in black and white. I find that color pictures are often more helpful at providing a good image for readers to reference.
Assessment: This a high-quality reference intended for clinicians to reference in a quick manner to learn more about various disease processes and treatments. It is easy to read and navigate and provides a breadth of knowledge over numerous topics without getting too "into the weeds" on the various topics. Compared to other pediatric references, such as The Harriet Lane Handbook (Elsevier), I feel it is on par with the information provided. It provides enough information to remind readers about the etiology and clinical features of the disease processes and then provides concise information about treatment options.
