Overview

When murder upsets the creative tranquility of an artists' colony, Scotland Yard sends in its most famous investigator. And what begins as a routine case turns out to be the most momentous of Roderick Alleyn's career.

For before he can corner the killer, his heart is captured by one of the suspects, the flashing-eyed painter Agatha Troy, who has nothing but scorn for the art of detection.

Editorial Reviews

New York Magazine

"It's time to start comparing Christie to Marsh instead of the other way around."

APRIL 2011 - AudioFile

After meeting during an ocean cruise, Inspector Roderick Alleyn encounters a young artist again when she becomes the suspect in the murder of a model. Marsh’s sixth mystery featuring Alleyn is a great story on its own merits, made more significant by the fact that the young artist in question is Agatha Troy, who would remain a part of the series—first as Alleyn’s friend and lover, then as his wife—for the remaining 26 books. Terry Wilton’s reading is rich and colorful. Although he pronounces the lead character’s name differently than Marsh did, he brings to life a rich cast of characters from various nationalities and backgrounds and vividly evokes the world of England between the wars.
