Marigold huye de los fantasmas. Los espectros de su antigua vida siguen persiguiéndola, pero quizá mudarse de una pequeña ciudad costera de California a la ciudad de Cerdarville sea el nuevo comienzo que necesita. Su madre ha aceptado un nuevo empleo en la Fundación Sterling con el que le han dado una casa, y Mari tiene que compartirla con su irritante hermanastra de diez años, Piper. La nueva casa de revista de Maple Street, alzada entre viviendas en ruinas y rodeada de vecinos desconfiados, tiene sus... secretos. Y esa es solo la mitad del problema: desaparecen objetos, las puertas se abren solas, las luces se apagan, hay sombras atravesando las habitaciones, se oyen voces en las paredes y por el sistema de ventilación se filtra un olor fétido que solo parece detectar Mari.
