The Cure's
High single really isn't all that remarkable, but that's not to say there's anything wrong with it.
"High" is one of the high points on
Wish, much the same as it is here. The opening track sounds identical to the version on
Wish with its winning
R.E.M. meets
Joy Division (jangle meets gloom) glories.
"This Twilight Garden" is an unreleased song that bears little similarity to the similarly titled
"Hanging Garden" on
Pornography. With its modern sheen and much of the
Disintegration-era sulking overindulgence stripped away, the song is a relatively simple mix of strummed guitars and moody keyboards, topped off by a dreamy processed vocal turn from
Robert Smith. Maybe it's
Disintegration Lite, but it's probably for the best.
"Play," also exclusive to this single, threatens to disintegrate altogether, as it mopes around via a
Martin Hannett synth feel and understated, infrequent vocals. Though the song never really picks up steam, it works as a background mood piece.
"High (Higher Mix)" is just what it claims to be: certain elements of the song are in a slightly different pitch. The song is sped up a bit, and it sounds just a little more heavenly. Though it overstays its welcome more than once, it's worlds better than most extended remixes of the era.
High certainly isn't essential, but it's 20 minutes of above average
Cure songs. ~ Tim DiGravina
