With almost a dozen flicks and accompanying compilations released in the decades-old franchise to date, there should be no surprises as to what the FAST X soundtrack has to offer. Propulsive, speaker-busting rap anthems and soul-stirring, genre-blending anthems abound, each as muscular as the cars and action sequences from the films. Of the former class, "Spinnin'" by Lil Durk and EST Gee; "Supafly" by Cootie, BiC Fizzle, and BigXthaPlug; and the Detroit-area showcase "Reaper" with Peezy, BabyTron, and Babyface Ray bring the heat, but it's the head-spinning "Steppers" by Choppa and Nardo Wick that'll have listeners inadvertently speeding down the fast lane with its unexpected EDM-build and riff attack. The "Fast X Remix" of "9 in My Hand" by Kordhell and Key Glock has a similar effect. J Balvin drops by for a hip-shaking anthem dedicated to the head of the family, "Toretto," while Argentinian singer Maria Becerra delivers a late-album highlight with "Te Cura." Swapping the purely physical for some emotions, "Won't Back Down" with YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Bailey Zimmerman, and Dermot Kennedy; "My City" with 24kGoldn, Kane Brown, and G Herbo; and "Angel Pt. 1" with Kodak Black, NLE Choppa, JVKE, Muni Long, and Jimin of BTS push the sentimentality over the top, offering some catharsis amidst all the pulse-pounding ragers. The Fast franchise does excess so well, and this soundtrack is no exception, providing fans with enough fodder to recreate their own high-speed fantasies (wearing seat belts and observing all relevant local traffic laws, of course). ~ Neil Z.
